Getting Started

Do you want to create a personal home page or personal website but don't know how to get started? This tutorial will explain how to create your own personal website. There is really nothing mysterious or difficult about building a basic website.
This article will take you through the process, step by step. So lets get started!

What Software You Will Need to Create Your Website

You will need two pieces of software to create your website. You will need a program to create your webpages and you will need a program to manipulate your images.

You fortunately have many choices when it comes to creating webpages. Most current versions of Word Processors allow your to turn documents into webpages. This may be suitable if you plan on creating a simple site. There are also many dedicated website design programs in varying levels of price, features and sophistication.

You will also need a program which will allow you to resize your images and save them in the proper format so they can be viewed on the Internet. These programs come in a variety of level of sophistication and price. For most personal sites, you can use a program like Adobe PhotoDeluxe for editing your images. PhotoDeluxe usually comes packaged for free with many scanners. PhotoDeluxe is also easy to learn.

For more details, see our section, What Software Should I Use ?

What Else You Will Need to Create Your Website

If you plan on using your own images, you will need a way to get your images into your computer. For this you will either need a digital camera or a combination of a traditional camera and either a flatbed scanner. Digital cameras are very convenient and the prices are coming down. If you prefer to use a traditional camera, or already have pictures you want to use on your website, a flatbed scanner may be the way to go. Good flatbed scanners are now priced as low as $100. With a flatbed scanner, you scan your photos or snapshots directly into your computer.

If you don't have any photographs of your own, don't worry, you can purchase royalty free photographs on CD from your nearest computer store. These range in price from $20 to $80 for a collection that usually includes photos, and graphic illustrations. The creators of these CDs usually allow you to use the photos on personal websites but limit the commercial use of the photos (you may not be allowed to use these photos on a website for your business, if you need photos for your commercial website, checkout photo sites on the web).

A word about copyright. I good friend once said to me, " I heard that once you put photographs on the web, they are free for anyone to use". NOTHING COULD BE FARTHER FROM THE TRUTH! All images and photographs on the web are protected by copyright and you can not legally use them unless you are explicitly given permission to use them by the copyright owner.

Next, we will look at what makes a good website, so that you can really make your website sizzle!
