  1. How do I create a website ?

This questions has many answers depending on what you want to do. Below are some thoughts on this. If you want to read our complete tutorial on website design click here.

If you want to create a simple personal home page, then you could use a word processor, such as Microsoft Word 2000 or Corel Word Perfect. The current version of both programs let you create web pages from normal documents. You simply save the pages as "html" and presto, you have a web page. If you already know how to use these programs, then there is no learning curve. Unfortunately, web pages created by word processors are not optimal. They are often large in size (meaning they take a longtime to download) and will not display well on older versions of Netscape or Internet Explorer.

The other alternative is to use dedicated website creation programs. You can read question 5 below for a summary of our recommendations or read a more complete review on our website design tutorial.

  2. Once I make my site, how to I put it on the Internet?

You send the files to a special area of our web server which is dedicated to you. This is done by a method known as "File Transfer Protocol", or FTP. Many of the better website design programs have user friendly file up loading and website management built in. Alternatively, there are dedicated freeware or shareware FTP programs available on the web.

You will need to provide the following information.

    host name/
    FTP address:
This will be assigned to you when you sign-up for a web-hosting account. If you are creating a free personal site that comes with an Internet Access Account, the address is home.aksi.net or users.aksi.net.
    host type name: UNIX (standard)
user name: Use the user name that has been assigned to your web-hosting account. If you are creating a free personal site that comes with an Internet Access Account, the user name is the same as your Internet Access Account user name.
password: Use the password that has been assigned to your web-hosting account. If you are creating a free personal site that comes with an Internet Access Account, the password is the same as your Internet Access Account password.
top directory / (or leave it blank)

  3. What should I name my home page ?

Your home page should be named index.htm or index.html .

  4. Why do I get a directory of my site when I go to the address of my website?

This is because you don't have a page named index.htm or index.html. You need to give your home page one of these two names.

  5. What web development software do you recommend?

In order to create a website you will need two types of software, web page creation software and image editing software. Below you will find a brief review for a more complete review click here for website building programs and click here for image editing programs.

For simple websites, use a program such as Adobe Page Mill (www.adobe.com) or Symantic Visual Page (www.symantec.com). Both Programs are fairly easy to learn and reasonably priced (under $100 list price). Our recommendation in this price range is Visual Page. Visual Page sports a clean user interface, a robust set of features and has good site management tools.

There are several low cost image editing tools that can be used with low cost website design programs. These include Paint Shop Pro (www.paintshoppro.com) and Adobe PhotoDeluxe. Paint Shop Pro is a "poor man's Photoshop". It sells for about $100. PhotoDeluxe usually comes bundled for free with scanners and printers.

For developing professional websites there are only two programs that we would recommend, Macromedia Dreamweaver (www.macromedia.com) or Adobe Go Live (www.adobe.com). Both of these are available for either PC or Mac. Many of the best sites on the web have been developed using one of these two programs? Why? Because both programs have the features that professionals demand. Both create uncorrupted HTML (the language that webpages are created in), have several editing and creation modes and are surprisingly easy to use once you understand how they work.

Both of these programs cost around $250 to $300 each. Macromedia offers Dreamweaver bundled with its companion image editing program, Fireworks for under $400. The one you by depends on personal taste and your choice of image editing programs. If you are already using Photoshop (full version 5.5 or later) than go with Adobe Go Live. If you are not, consider the Fireworks, Dreamweaver bundle.

  6. Why do my pages take so long to appear?

You pages file size is too large. Your total page size including images should ideally be under 35KB. If you have an image intensive site, this is not practical. Try to keep you total page size, including images to under 55KB.

The main culprit is usually large images. The most common mistake is take a large image and resize it in the website editing program rather than the image editing program. Don't Do This! An full screen image squashed down to postage stamp size will still carry being downloaded at full size. Your Web browser is reducing this image size as the page loads. The right way to handle images is to always resize then in your image editing program which will reduce the file size.

  7. What is the difference between a gif and jpeg image?

JPEG and GIF are types of image compression. Use JPEG to compress photographs and images with a lot of shading. Use GIF to compress images with large areas of continuous color. Click Here for More Information on optimizing images.
