Graphics,
Visualization & Usability (GVU) Center at Georgia Tech, Internet Demographic
Surveys (http://www.gvu.gatech.edu/gvu/user_surveys/)
These are the often quoted GVU Internet Demographic Surveys. These surveys
detail attitudes and usage of the internet. Unfortunately, these surveys
are not conducted by random sampling. The good news is that all of the
information is available for you to look at free of charge. General Internet Business Books Making Money in Cyberspace by Paul and Sarah Edwards (ISBN: 0874778840) This is excellent introduction to Internet business. In a very easy to read conversation style, the authors explain the demographic and pschological factors that will make websites succeed or fail. Most of the authors' points are backed by interesting case studies. If you could only read two books about internet business, it should be this one and Phillip Greenspun's Book below. Highly Recommended Why Entrepeneurs Fail by James W. Halloran (Liberty Hall Press ISBN: 0-8306-3511-4) This book does not specifically address the World Wide Web (It was written in 1991). I include it here because it is an excellent, highly readable, account of why small and medium businesses fail. This small book (less than 200 pages) shows you 20 pitfalls that cause most business failures. Each pitfall is illustrated by a clear case study. Highly Recommended Secrets of Sucessful Web Sites by David Siegel (Hayden Books ISBN: 1-56830-382-3) This is a unique book on website project management. David Siegel, who is founder of a highly sucessful web design firm, offers a unique glimpse into the process of what goes into creating a sucessful website. Building Scalable Web Communities and Large Business Sites Phil and Alex's Guide to Web Publishing by Phillip Greenspun (ISBN: 1-55860-534-7 Morgan Kaufmann Publishing) You can read the entire book on line at: http://photo.net/wtr/thebook/ This book is the definitive guide to creating large scale database driven websites and on-line communities. This book is aimed at a wide audience, from novices to seasoned web designers, programmers and corporate exectutives.Phil Greenspun is highly entertaining, and keeps the book lively and easy to read. Highly Recommended Netrepreneur: The Dimensions fo Transferring Your Business Model to the Internet (Que ISBN:0-7897-1725-5) This very good book is aimed at Corporate Businesses who want to create a sucessful business model for the Internet. The book covers areas not covered by most of the other books such as using the internet for sales force automation, and inventory systems. It also covers Vitual Storefronts from the point of view of larger businesses. Building E-Commerce Sites Creating the Virtual Store by Magdalena Yesil (ISBN 0-471-16494-1) This book is slightly dated (published 1997) but has many excellent ideas about "taking customers from browsers to buyers". The author, who is one of the founders of Cybercash, takes you from "designing a shopping experience" to the details of accepting on-line payments. Creating Stores on the Web by Joe Cataudella, Ben Sawyer and Dave Greely (Peach Pit Press ISBN 0-201-69681-9) Joe Cataudella, guides you through the steps of creating a successful Internet presence. He covers a broad range of topics including marketing and promotion, order fulfillment, building customer loyalty, and Internet legal issues. User Interface Design for Business Designing Business by Clement Mok (Adobe Press ISBN 1-56830-282-7) In depth and beautiful illustration book on information systems design. Easy reading with 5 clear case studies. |
